Ushettige Don Nishantha Jayaweera was sworn in as a Member of Parliament of the Tenth Parliament, yesterday, before Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.
Following the oath taking the new MP signed the Members’ Roll placed before the Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera.
The Election Commission issued an Extraordinary Gazette Notification on July 07 appointing Nishantha Jayaweera as a National List Member of Parliament to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr Harshana Sooriyapperuma, Member of Parliament who was elected to the Tenth Parliament from the National List representing the NPP.
Jayaweera is a former Deputy Commissioner General of the Department of Inland Revenue, where he served over 25 years. He was the Excise Commissioner General from September to December 2024 and later served as an Additional Secretary to the President. Jayaweera graduated from the University of Kelaniya with Physics Special degree and obtained his masters in Economics from the same university. He has a postgraduate degree in taxation from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
