Walkout leaves Seethawaka local council headless

Election of PS head and deputy postponed indefinitely

The election of a new Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha was indefinitely postponed for the second consecutive time yesterday (15), as some councillors staged a walkout rendering the meeting inquorate.

The meeting, convened by Western Province Local Government Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara descended into chaos when members failed to agree on whether the head and the deputy head of the council should be elected by secret ballot or open ballot.

According to officials, 24 members supported a secret ballot while 23 favoured an open vote. However, before proceedings could continue, some councillors staged a walkout.

Commissioner Jayasundara was then compelled to postpone the session indefinitely, marking the second failed attempt to elect a new leadership for the council. The first meeting, held on 17 June, was similarly postponed due to internal disputes over voting procedures.

Efforts to fill the leadership vacuum at the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha remain in limbo, with no new date announced for a fresh sitting, party sources said.
