Protesters demand international probe into genocide allegation

Protests were held in the North and East over the weekend as families of the disappeared, civil society organisations, and human rights defenders rallied to demand an international, independent mechanism to probe the alleged genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The demonstrations, led by the North East Social Movement were held in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, and Ampara, with a parallel protest also held in Colombo. Protesters denounced Sri Lanka’s repeated failure to deliver justice through domestic mechanisms and called for international criminal accountability, Tamil Guardian reported on 28 July.
