Female parliament employee who complained of sexual harassment gives evidence

A female employee who lodged complaints of sexual harassment and ill-treatment within Parliament’s Department of Information Systems and Management was questioned for more than five hours on Monday (11) by a special investigative committee.

The three-member panel, chaired by retired High Court Judge Sujatha Alahapperuma opened its proceedings by recording the complainant’s detailed statement, during which she is said to have presented extensive evidence of alleged misconduct spanning nearly ten years.

Sources said the marathon session sought to establish a comprehensive timeline of the alleged abuse and identify individuals involved. The committee is scheduled to reconvene on 25 August for a second round of questioning before summoning the four officers accused of the offences.

Judge Alahapperuma is expected to submit her final report to the Speaker after several days of hearings.
