Nestlé Lanka has expanded its efforts to support sustainable coconut farming in Sri Lanka through the second edition of its Coconut Development Plan, in partnership with the Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB).
The two-day training programme, held at CCB’s Coconut Development Training Center in Lunuwila, trained 25 local coconut farmers on implementing regenerative agricultural practices aimed at improving yields while conserving soil and water resources. The initiative builds on the success of a pilot programme launched in 2024.
Deputy General Manager of the CCB, Susantha Jayalath, said the collaboration “supports local coconut farmers, uplifts livelihoods, and contributes to a healthier, more sustainable ecosystem.” He added that the training provides a platform for knowledge sharing at a time when the Sri Lankan coconut industry faces significant challenges.
Nestlé Chairman and Managing Director Bernie Stefan said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to advancing coconut cultivation and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. “This collaboration promotes sustainable farming methods and helps unlock the full potential of this invaluable crop,” he noted.
Operating in Sri Lanka for over 115 years, Nestlé supports more than 8,000 medium and large-scale coconut farmers through procurement and initiatives like the Coconut Development Plan, contributing billions of rupees to the local coconut industry.
