Police investigations have revealed that a person called ‘Army Asanka’, killed in a Special Task Force (STF) operation at Wewegama, Suriyawewa, was a contract killer with underworld links.
The STF launched a raid in the early hours of yesterday (22) following information that a group of underworld criminals was hiding in the Wewegama area. During the operation, two suspects opened fire at STF personnel with a 12-bore shotgun.
STF officers returned fire, injuring one of the suspects, while the other managed to escape. An STF officer was also injured in the attack.
Both the injured suspect and the STF officer were admitted to the Suriyawewa Hospital, where ‘Army Asanka’, the
contract killer, succumbed to his injuries. Investigations revealed that Asanka had previously served in the Army before leaving the service.Inquiries are being carried out under the supervision of STF Commanding Officer, DIG Saman Silva.
