Railway Dept. goes to town about lighting up nine arches Demodara Bridge built by the British in 1919

The Railway Department has announced plans to illuminate the historical Nine Arches Bridge in Demodara, allowing both local and foreign tourists to view the iconic colonial-era structure around the clock, starting from August.

The initiative, aimed at enhancing tourist experiences along the upcountry railway line, will see the bridge — also known as the Bridge in the Sky — lit up with electric lighting, transforming it into a nighttime attraction.

General Manager of Railways, Dhammika Jayasundara, said that with such improvements, and the promotion of extended viewing hours, the Department intends to introduce a tourist fee to support ongoing maintenance and infrastructure development.

The Nine Arches Bridge, completed in 1919, is considered a marvel of British-era railway engineering. Designed to accommodate a sharp nine-degree curve and steep incline, the bridge was built entirely by local labour, under British supervision, using sand-cement blocks and innovative arch-supporting techniques.

Nestled between Ella and Demodara railway stations, the bridge has become a popular destination for both local and international visitors, drawn by its architectural ingenuity and lush, scenic surroundings. The planned illumination is expected to further boost tourism in the region and extend visitor engagement beyond daylight hours.
