Leader of the Opposition and the SJB Sajith Premadasa has voiced serious concern over a pro-government YouTuber predicting the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, several days ago.
Taking to ‘X’, MP Premadasa yesterday asked whether the YouTuber’s prediction was indicative of a conspiracy. “A YouTuber predicting the arrest of a former President can’t be a coincidence… it is a sad day when something as sacred as law and order is reduced to cheap theatrics,” he said.
Premadasa’s comments followed the former President Wickremesinghe’s arrest by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday over alleged misuse of state funds during a visit to London while he was the President.
Several other Opposition politicians have demanded to know from the government how some pro-NPP social media activists had prior knowledge of Wickremesinghe’s arrest. Among them are former Ministers Dayasiri Jayasekera and Chamara Sampath Dasanayake. Former Justice Minister Ali Sabry also raised concerns about the arrest.
He has said in a social media post: “Ranil Wickremesinghe’s arrest as predicted by a YouTuber is deeply troubling. Such actions reflect a disturbing trend of vindictive and destructive politics that undermine our institutions and future. This cycle must end. Sri Lanka deserves a politics of reason and stability.”
