SLPP suspends Deputy Mayor of Galle for violating party directive

The SLPP suspended the party membership of Priyantha Godagama Sahabandu, who was recently appointed Deputy Mayor of the Galle Municipal Council.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued yesterday by SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who also confirmed that disciplinary action will be initiated against Godagama. According to the statement, the Deputy Mayor’s appointment was made in violation of party instructions regarding the election process for the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The SLPP claims that all members had been previously informed of the official procedure to be followed during the election. However, the party alleges that the process was disregarded, ultimately leading to Godagama’s election in a manner inconsistent with party directives.

As a result, his party membership has been suspended with immediate effect, and all positions and responsibilities he held within the SLPP have been revoked.

Sources said that Godagama, an SLPP member, supported the National People’s Power (NPP) in establishing control of the Galle Municipal Council earlier in the day, following which he was appointed Deputy Mayor.
