Illegal registration of vehicles: Ex-DMT Commissioner General arrested

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) investigating the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) registering vehicles outside the laid down procedure has arrested one of its former Commissioners, General Nishantha Weerasingha, and two other ex-officials.

CIABOC sources said that the arrests had been made in line with an investigation into vehicles that were illegally registered with the Department of Motor Traffic without receiving proper clearance from Sri Lanka Customs. The former Commissioner General has been arrested for granting approval to issue a number plate to a Toyota jeep. The others apprehended were identified as a former Assistant Director of Information Technology at the Department and a clerk for facilitating the illegal data entry.
