The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has summoned National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa to its Headquarters today (09) to record a statement on the ongoing investigations into the release of over 300 containers from the Colombo port last January without Customs inspection.
A spokesman for the NFF said that the CID had informed Weerawansa that it needed to record a statement from him regarding views expressed by him on the release of containers.
The spokesman asked whether the CID intended to question all those who attacked the government over the controversial release of containers.
SJB MP Mujibur Rahuman said the CID was planning to question him as well on the container controversy. If the government and police were serious about finding out the truth, then the consignees of those controversial containers, too, should be questioned, he said.
Rahuman said culpability of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Leader of the House, who is also the Transport Minister, Bimal Rathnayake, in the release of containers, couldn’t be suppressed. “We won’t succumb to NPP’s efforts to intimidate the genuine Opposition,” the former UNPer said, (SF)
