CID raids Hambantota Bird Park: 21 illegal motorcycles and cannabis plants seized

The CID had seized 21 illegally imported motorcycles and four cannabis plants following a raid on the Hambantota Bird Park, police said on Saturday.

The raid, carried out on a tip-off received by Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya, was conducted as part of a countrywide crackdown on organised crime and narcotics. A team, led by CID Director SSP Kamal Ariyawansa, uncovered the contraband hidden inside a bird feed warehouse within the Naagarewewa bird sanctuary premises.

The motorcycles, reportedly banned for import were found stored without required documents.

In addition, four cannabis plants grown illegally within the sanctuary premises were also seized during the raid.

The park manager and warehouse supervisor of the facility, residents of Matara and Middeniya, aged between 40 and 50, were taken into custody.

Further investigations are underway.
