Three fishermen are believed to have died when their trawler ‘Nihathamani 01’ (Reg No.IMUL – A- 0690 – GLE) collided with a foreign ship about 271 nautical miles (501 km) southwest of Galle on Monday (02).
According to Navy Headquarters, another local fishing trawler Lasantha 01, which was nearby, had managed to rescue four fishermen. The bodies of the dead fishermen haven’t been found.
The Merchant Shipping Secretariat, with the assistance of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo, was coordinating efforts to identify the foreign ship involved in the accident with a view to pursuing legal action.
Navy Headquarters said SLNS Gajabahu had brought the rescued fishermen ashore. One of the rescued fishermen is in a critical condition, SLN said.
