Postal voting for the 2024 Presidential Election officially commenced yesterday (4), and will end tomorrow (6). The voting was carried out peacefully across the country.
Speaking to Ceylon Today, Colombo District Deputy Election Commissioner, Ravindra Subashana Wedage, said a special interest in State employees was observed in the Colombo District yesterday (4) in casting postal votes. He said officials attached to District Secretariats, election offices, and Police stations cast their votes with great enthusiasm. Deputy Commissioner Wedage said over 80 per cent of the postal votes in Colombo were cast yesterday (4), and almost 100 per cent of postal votes have been cast by staff at Police stations. He also added that he had personally visited most polling stations and no issues have been reported so far.
He encouraged all eligible voters to go to the polling stations early in the morning on Election Day and cast their valuable votes similarly. Postal voting, which will continue till tomorrow (6), will be carried out at more than 1,500 polling stations, with 712,319 State sector employees eligible for postal voting expected to cast their votes in this election.
Members of the Security Forces also can cast their postal vote today (5) and tomorrow (6).
The Election Commission said those who are unable to cast their vote by tomorrow will be able to cast their vote on 11 September and 12 September at the district secretariats and the Election Commission itself. If a person is unable to vote on these two days as well, they can cast their vote on Election Day – 21 September 2024.
