Incumbent President and Independent Candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (4) claimed that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is unlikely to win against Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Addressing a public rally in Mahiyanganaya, Wickremesinghe said the political competition in Sri Lanka has traditionally been between two main figures, whether for the position of Prime Minister or President.
“As Prime Minister, it is crucial to lead your party effectively and as Opposition Leader, one must prevent others from becoming the candidate. Sajith Premadasa’s failure to do so has only strengthened Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s position.
When I was Opposition Leader, I didn’t allow that and neither did Mahinda Rajapaksa. We joined the good governance government—something Sajith Premadasa should have done as well. Anura Kumara Dissanayake has now become a threat to Sajith, who wasted time with lengthy speeches in Parliament. Sajith cannot defeat Anura who gained from Sajith’s missteps,” he said.
He then urged the UNP members to ‘fulfil their responsibilities’ and collaborate for the country’s future.
