Dissident SLPP MPs, including Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, will officially announce the formation of a new political alliance at an event scheduled to be held at Waters Edge hotel today (05)
Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said yesterday (04) that the new alliance would consist of those backing President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Sept. 21 presidential election.
Addressing the media at Battaramulla, Minister Pathirana declared that the new grouping intended to contest the elections that would be held after the presidential election. Dr. Pathirana said that those now with the SLPP could switch their allegiance to the new alliance.
State Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon and State Justice Minister Anuradha Jayaratne explained that their intention was to create space for all communities to work together.
The dissident group made the declaration in the wake of SLPP candidate Namal Rajapaksa’s public appeal for them to return to the party (SF)
