The CID on Thursday (05) arrested former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Anuradhapura, Sanjeewa Mahanama, a key suspect in the shooting incident involving former MP Uddika Premarathna’s vehicle.
Mahanama was apprehended in Malabe and taken to the CID headquarters for questioning.
The shooting took place on 17 September 2023, shortly after the former MP had parked his vehicle near residence in Anuradhapura. The side window of the car was damaged by gunfire though the MP himself was unharmed.
A CID investigation revealed that the incident had been staged. Mahanama fled to Malaysia after his involvement in the shooting was uncovered. Having got to know that he had returned to Sri Lanka a few months back, courts ordered the CID to arrest him immediately.
Mahanama is due to be produced before the court soon. Police said they would also arrest former MP Premaratne.
