Treasury bond scams:
By Shyam Nuwan Gannewatte
Foreign Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath yesterday (01) said that the government could have former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, wanted here in connection with the Treasury bond scams, extradited from Singapore.
As Ranil Wickremesinghe no longer had immunity, the UNP leader, too, could be summoned before court, Minister Herath said.
Herath said so in response to The Island query regarding the still unresolved issue.
At the onset of the briefing, Minister Herath said that the Public Security Ministry was in the process of taking action regarding the Treasury bond scams.
Minister Herath assured that President Dissanayake’s government would definitely take action against the Treasury bond racketeers, taking into consideration the Parliamentary Select Committee report as well as the Presidential Commission of Inquiry findings.
Pointing out that Mahendran had left the country before the handing over of the Presidential Commission report to the President, Herath said Singapore had ignored Sri Lanka’s previous requests for his extradition.
Wickremesinghe appointed Singaporean Mahendran as the Governor in January 2015 but was replaced in the following year by President Sirisena after the second Treasury bond scam.
