The Supreme Court yesterday (6) issued an interim injunction restraining the implementation of the Gazette Notification issued during the tenure of the previous Government increasing the annual liquor sales licence fee.
The Supreme Court bench consisting of Supreme Court Justices A. H. M. D. Nawas, Kumuduni Wickremesinghe and Priyantha Fernando issued the Order considering a Fundamental Rights application filed by the Liquor Sales Licence Owners’ Association.
The petitioners filed the Finance Ministry Secretary and several others as the respondents in their application.
The petitioners said, the annual liquor sales licence fee was increased to Rs 20 million through the Gazette 2024/1. They said, the decision was unjust and their Fundamental Right was breached by the action. They pleaded before the Court to declare that the petitioners’ Fundamental Rights had been violated by the said Gazette Notification.
The petitioners pleaded to issue an order directing the respondents to charge the annual fee based on the Gazette Notification issued in 2017 in that regard.
