SJB Kandy District MP Chamindrani Kiriella in Parliament expressed her belief that the upcoming national budget will help reduce the significant economic pressures currently faced by the public.
Participating in a debate on President Anurak Kumara Dissanayale’s policy statement, MP Kiriella said that as a newly elected member of the 10th Parliament, Kiriella reflected on the trust placed in her by the people of her district during the 2024 election, where she was selected as a representative due to her commitment to serving the public. She conveyed her gratitude to the people of the Kandy District, particularly those from the Sekadagala area, for their support.
Kiriella also paid tribute to former MP Lakshman Kiriella, who served the Kandy District and Sri Lanka for over 36 years. She noted that she is committed to continuing his legacy of service and to furthering the progress he initiated.
Expressing her dedication to making Sri Lanka a more prosperous and thriving nation, Kiriella stated that, as a member of the opposition, she would work towards serving the public with dignity and honor. She also praised the current Parliament’s representation of women, citing the country’s first female Prime Minister, the current female Secretary-General of Parliament, and the serving female President as significant milestones for women in leadership roles.
Kiriella highlighted that while Sri Lanka had previously seen a reduction in female representation in Parliament during discussions with other nations, she is optimistic that a greater collective effort through the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus will ensure more substantial services for women in the future.
Further, she recalled a statement made by President Dissanayake during the opening of the 10th Parliament, where he mentioned that the country had reached an agreement with international financial institutions like the IMF. Kiriella noted that, in the past, the JVP had opposed the IMF agreement, but the government had promised to reduce the economic pressures on the people during the recent election. She expressed hope that the upcoming budget would fulfill this promise.
