The Navy over the weekend took hold of about 126 kilos (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis adrift in waters off Delft Island, Jaffna.
The Navy Headquarters said that Inshore Patrol Craft, attached to SLNS Wasabha in the Northern Naval Command, had retrieved 44 polythene packages drifting in the Delft sea area. The packages contained about 126kg and 300g (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis.
A senior official said that smugglers may have abandoned the consignment of Kerala cannabis after failing to move them to land due to constant naval patrols. The gross street value of the recovered Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 50 mn, according to the official.
