The death toll from an unknown fever spreading in Jaffna climbed to five yesterday (11).
Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Dr. P. Sathyamurthi said yesterday (11) that about seven samples taken from the deceased had been sent to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) for testing.
Dr. Sathyamurthi said that of the five, one of the patients had been transferred from General Hospital, Kilinochchi, while two others were from Point Pedro and Navatkuli in the Jaffna District. He said there had been a sudden deterioration in their condition while abnormalities had been noted in their kidneys.
The Jaffna TH Director said that although it was a relatively unknown fever, it was suspected that the patients had contracted Leptospirosis, better known as rat fever.
“But we will know the definite cause of death only when the results from the sample tests arrive,” he explained.
Dr. Sathyamurthi said that discussions were to be held with the Epidemiology Unit as well in this regard.
