The Supreme Court yesterday (28) declared that several petitions filed against the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), without the approval of the Constitutional Council, as being unconstitutional, would be taken up for hearing on 08 September.
The petitions were taken up before the Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Janak De Silva, Sobitha Rajakaruna, and Sampath K. B. Wijeratne.
Deshabandu Tennakoon’s appointment has been challenged by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Young Journalists’ Association and several others.
The Supreme Court has also issued an interim injunction preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from exercising the powers and duties of the position of IGP. The order will remain in effect until the conclusion of the hearing of the petitions.
