Health authorities say that Sri Lanka has entered a critical period of overlapping viral outbreaks following the detection of new COVID subvariants. They yesterday confirmed the presence of two new Omicron sub variants of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, as hospitals reported a significant rise in the admission of children suffering from viral infections, such as chikungunya, dengue, and influenza.
The Medical Research Institute has detected the Covid sub variants LF.7 and XFG by analysing samples collected from hospitals across the country.
Dr. Jude Jayamaha, Consultant Virologist, has confirmed the detection, but asked the public not to panic.
Health authorities have asked the public to adopt preventive measures and asked pregnant women, elderly individuals, and others with comorbidities to take extra precautions. They have recommended wearing masks and avoiding crowded places.
