One of Sri Lanka’s beloved and iconic artistes, Iranganie Serasinghe, celebrates her birthday today (09).Born in 1927, Serasinghe is a pioneering figure in Sri Lankan theatre and cinema, widely respected not only for her talent on stage and screen but also for her trailblazing journey as a woman in the arts during a time when few dared to pursue such paths.
An alumna of Bishop’s College and Girls’ High School, Kandy, Serasinghe made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan student to study drama at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She also studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, under the mentorship of the renowned Professor EFC Ludowyk, a founding figure in Sri Lankan theatre.
