Probe into unlawful release of A’Pura prisoner throws light on past transgressions

Cabinet spokesperson, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, said yesterday that the investigation into the unlawful release of an inmate under the cover of a presidential pardon was now delving into past events and that he was unable to predict where it would ultimately lead.

Dr Jayatissa, who is also the Minister of Mass Media and Health, said that legal action would be taken against those responsible for the unlawful release of prisoners, and that all relevant investigations had already commenced.

Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing, the Minister said so in response to questions raised by journalists.

He added that the Cabinet’s decision to suspend the Commissioner General of Prisons had been made to ensure that the investigation could proceed without interference, and reiterated that the government was taking action against wrongdoing and illegal practices occurring within the prison system.
