The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said yesterday that maintenance work on the third generation unit of the Norochcholai Power Plant had been initiated yesterday (13) at midnight, during which the unit was taken offline.
Accordingly, it is expected to take 25 days to complete the necessary maintenance work. The CEB further mentions that by deactivating this unit, the national grid will lose 300 megawatts of power.
Due to the current rainy conditions, this shortfall will be met primarily from hydroelectric power generation, which is why maintenance work is being carried out at the power plant, according to the CEB.
CEB’s spokesperson, Dhammika Wimalaratne, states that there will be no disruption in the electricity supply, as two other generation units at Norochcholai are still operational.
Meanwhile, the Kelanitissa Combined Power Plant, which has been under maintenance for the past one and a half months, is expected to be reconnected to the grid in the coming days. This will also bring back 165 megawatts to the national grid.
