Thilina Sampath, also known as ‘Walas Kata’, a close aide of notorious underworld leader Manudinu Padmasiri Perera alias Kehelbaddara Padme, suffered serious injuries when he tried to escape by jumping from the third floor of the Peliyagoda Crimes Division building. He was rushed to Colombo National Hospital on 09 August.
According to police, Walas Kata assaulted a police officer guarding him while being taken to a toilet before pushing the officer and leaping from the 27-foot-high building. He survived but sustained multiple fractures to both legs and his left arm.
Walas Kata is currently under treatment, with hospital sources confirming he is out of danger. The Peliyagoda Crimes Division has launched an investigation following Walas Kata’s revelations about arms smuggling activities carried out at the behest of Kehelbaddara Padme who is in hiding.
At the time of the incident, four police officers were assigned to guard Walas Kata and other underworld suspects.
