Credit card usage rises 3.8% in first seven months

The number of active credit cards in Sri Lanka rose by 12,325 in July, reaching 2,088,069 by the end of the month, Central Bank data show. This reflects a 0.59 percent increase, compared to 2,075,744 cards in June.

In the first seven months of 2025, active credit cards have climbed by 79,613 or 3.8 percent, underscoring the country’s economic recovery and falling interest rates.

The sector recorded a 4.8 percent growth, or 91,371 additional active cards, in 2024, driven by easing monetary policy and aggressive promotional campaigns by banks.

However, the number of active cards dropped by 39,991, or 1.8 percent, in 2023, following Sri Lanka’s declaration of bankruptcy in 2022 and sharp hikes in Central Bank policy rates.
