The Sri Lanka Air Force showcased an extraordinary celebration of culinary excellence on 12 and 13 Sept, with the second edition of the SLAF Culinary Art Competition taking place in the historic city of Sigiriya. The awarding ceremony was held on the 13th of September 2025, graced by the presence of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, together with the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit, Krishanthi Edirisinghe.
This competition was organized under the guidance of the Commander of the Air Force and the close supervision of Director General Logistics, Air Vice Marshal Gladwin Athapaththu, aiming nurturing the culinary creativity and talent across the Air Force.
This year’s competition attracted 268 participants representing the Tri Forces, professionals from regional hotels, and school children from the North Central and Central Provinces. Competitors, classified under Professional, Apprentice, and School categories, showcased their skills in artistic food presentations, live cooking, and bartending. The competition was conducted in accordance with the stringent standards of the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS), ensuring a benchmark of international excellence.
A distinguished panel of judges, comprising eminent Sri Lankan culinary experts including Chef Gerard Mendis, Chairman of the Chef Guild of Lanka, together with senior guild members, added prestige to the event. Their expertise ensured both fairness and professionalism in evaluating the competitors’ performances.
Winners across the categories were awarded medals and certificates in recognition of their achievements. In addition, they were offered opportunities for further training and the chance to represent the Sri Lanka Air Force at the Culinary Arts Food Expo 2026, organized by the Chef Guild of Sri Lanka—providing a platform for national-level recognition and contribution to the broader culinary industry. The competition also reflects the Air Force’s long-term vision to enhance the Hospitality Management School at SLAF Station Sigiriya, with plans underway to expand training opportunities for aspiring youth in the hospitality sector.
Adding prestige to the occasion, several members of the Air Force Board of Management including Director General Aeronautical, Air Vice Marshal Gihan Senevirathne; Director General Training, Air Vice Marshal Thushara Weerarathne; and Director General Electronic and Computer Engineering, Air Vice Marshal Asitha Hettiarachchi, together with other senior officers and distinguished guests, were present to witness the event.
The SLAF Culinary Art Competition 2025 not only celebrated the artistry and professionalism of the Air Force’s culinary talent but also stood as a testament to the organization’s commitment to fostering innovation, career development, and excellence in hospitality management across Sri Lanka.
