­NPP govt. going ahead with Office of Public Prosecutor

The NPP government is going ahead with the presidential election promise to set up Office of the Public Prosecutor amidst protests from the Opposition and some civil society organisations.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara yesterday (01) chaired a meeting to discuss the issue. Among those present were justice Yasantha Kodagoda, AG Parinda Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry Ayesha Jinasena, President of BASL Rajeewa Amarasuriya and several other experts.

The NPP proposed through its election manifesto to introduce an Office of the Public Prosecutor as a mechanism to prevent delays within the judicial system and establish an independent Office of the Public Prosecutor and Provincial Sub Offices, operating separately from the Attorney General’s Department, to conduct cases on behalf of the Government
