Over USD 1 bn spent on vehicle imports so far this year – CBSL

The Central Bank’s External Sector Performance Report for August 2025 has revealed that the country spent US$1,007.5 million on vehicle imports from January to August 2025.

The NPP government on 18 December, 2024, announced the lifting of the vehicles import ban which was put in place in 2020 to ease the pressure on foreign exchange reserves owing to the COVID-19 pandemic that brought about an economic crisis.

According to the CBSL report, the highest monthly expenditure on vehicle imports this year was recorded last month, totalling US$255.7 million.
