Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala yesterday told Parliament that the government remained committed to protecting the former Presidents, despite the repeal of the Former Presidents’ Entitlements Act.
Speaking during parliamentary proceedings, Minister Wijepala said only some perks enjoyed by the former Heads of State, such as official residences and vehicles, had been abolished.
“Several former Presidents have already returned vehicles they previously used,” Wijepala told the House.
He added that some ex-Presidents had voluntarily returned vehicles used for their personal protection.
“If required, they can make requests for security arrangements, including vehicles, and the government is prepared to consider them,” the Minister said.
Reiterating that the state would ensure the safety of former Heads of State, Wijepala said vehicles handed back could be reissued purely for security purposes.
