Petition challenging MoU with India on controversial digital ID project dismissed

The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed two fundamental rights petitions filed by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and two others, seeking the annulment of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with India on a controversial digital identity card project.

A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, accepted preliminary objections raised by the Attorney General, ruling that the petitions could not proceed. As a result, the court dismissed the cases without holding a hearing.

The MoU, part of a government initiative to implement digital identity cards for Sri Lankan citizens, was challenged on constitutional grounds by the petitioners. The Supreme Court’s decision effectively upholds the agreement between the two countries.
