In a remarkable global recognition, Jaffna has been named one of the 25 best cities to visit in the world in 2026 by international travel authority Lonely Planet.
The announcement marks a major milestone for Sri Lanka, reaffirming its growing appeal as a destination rich in culture, heritage, and regional diversity. According to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 list, Jaffna ranks alongside world-renowned destinations such as Peru, Maine in the USA, Cádiz in Spain, and Réunion Island in Africa.
Highlighting the city’s cultural and historical significance, Lonely Planet described Jaffna as a unique cultural hub that continues to attract thousands of visitors drawn to its temples, colonial landmarks, and vibrant Tamil heritage.
The Italian edition of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 was launched at a press conference, in Milan, on 22 October, where the Sri Lanka Consulate General in Milan, representing the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, showcased traditional Northern cuisine to an international audience.
Tourism officials said Jaffna’s inclusion on the prestigious list underscores the government’s continued efforts to promote Sri Lanka’s regional diversity and strengthen its position as one of the most sought-after destinations in Asia.
Founded in 1970, Lonely Planet is one of the world’s most trusted travel media brands, with over 150 million guidebooks sold globally and a wide-reaching digital presence. Its annual Best in Travel list identifies the top 25 destinations and experiences around the world for the coming year, offering expert recommendations, local insights, and vivid photography.
The recognition of Jaffna, officials noted, is expected to give a strong boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism drive for 2026, spotlighting the island’s northern region as a must-visit cultural destination on the global travel map.
