Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, on a three-day visit to India, met Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, in New Delhi, on Tuesday (04), sources said, adding that they exchanged views on strengthening parliamentary cooperation between Sri Lanka and India.
The meeting focused on enhancing institutional professionalism, legislative research, and youth participation in Parliament.
They agreed to promote collaboration through study tours, capacity-building programmes, and structured exchanges.
Premadasa also toured the new Speaker’s Office, in the Lok Sabha complex, observing its fully digitalised, paperless operations a model of modern legislative efficiency.
On the previous day, Premadasa met senior representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi where discussions centred on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
Sources said that Premadasa proposed the establishment of an operational task force under the India–Sri Lanka Joint Economic Commission to facilitate trade flows and investment.
Premadasa also meet India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the Ministry of Finance, in New Delhi, for discussions on deepening bilateral economic cooperation and regional integration.
