Speaker issues stern warning to MPs over billingsgate in House

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne yesterday issued a stern warning to MPs, urging them to put an end to personal attacks, improper forms of address and levelling of unsubstantiated allegations during sittings.

Opening the day’s proceedings, the Speaker said such behaviour had become increasingly frequent in recent weeks and was eroding the dignity of Parliament.

Describing the trend as “regrettable” and “disrespectful to the House,” he called on members to avoid unparliamentary language and to conduct themselves with decorum.

Wickramaratne appealed for the cooperation of all MPs to maintain order and uphold the standards of the legislature.
