Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has urged the Canadian government to take action against activities in Canada promoting separatist ideologies linked to Sri Lanka, including public display of LTTE symbols, Ministry sources said.
Herath made the request during a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner, Isabelle Catherine Martin, stressing that events, or campaigns, reviving separatist narratives, could undermine Sri Lanka’s national unity and reconciliation efforts. He also warned that such activities risk straining bilateral relations, if left unchecked.
High Commissioner Martin reaffirmed that the LTTE is a banned terrorist organisation in Canada and that its symbols are not recognised. She reiterated Canada’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
