Civil activists complain to HRC over exclusion of local students from KDU Medical Faculty

A complaint was submitted to the Human Rights Commission yesterday (29) by civil activists and the President of the Federation of Medical and Civil Rights Professional Associations, Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, opposing the exclusion of local students from the medical faculty of the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).

According to the complaint, the admission of local students to the KDU’s medical faculty has currently been suspended, following a recent statement made by State Minister of Defence Anura Jayasekara.

Dr. Sanjeewa said that many professionals who were committed to bringing the new government to power, as well as students from ordinary families who have passed their Advanced Level examinations, are now under severe distress due to the government decision.

He said that under those circumstances, the country stood to lose close to a billion dollars as Sri Lankan students are compelled to seek higher education abroad.

Dr. Sanjeewa has emphasised in the complaint that there is an urgent need to reopen the KDU medical faculty to local students under regulated and standardised conditions.
