The CID has commenced a wide-ranging investigation into a recent wave of social media posts defamatory of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Acting on instructions from Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, a special CID unit is probing the social media platforms and YouTube channels responsible for spreading the malicious content.
Police sources revealed that the defamatory material was circulated, using the names of several government ministers and supporters of the ruling administration.
A formal complaint has been lodged with the CID urging a thorough probe into the matter.
Ruling party sources said that the fake campaigns have caused significant damage to the standing of the President, the government, and multiple Cabinet Ministers.
