Statements had been recorded from six employees of the Colombo National Hospital on Thursday in connection with the disappearance of an infant’s body from the hospital mortuary, Maradana Police said yesterday (05).
A senior police officer told The Island that statements had been obtained from the mortuary staff, but the fate of the body remains a mystery as of last evening. He said investigators suspected the remains may have been mistakenly sent with other bodies taken for burial.
Police said the matter was reported to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of Maradana Police OIC, Chief Inspector Pathma Kumara.
The body, recovered on 01 August from a toilet inside a train at the Maligawatte railway yard, was placed in the morgue for a post-mortem examination following a magisterial order.Policemen from Dematagoda discovered that the body was missing while conducting an inquiry and immediately informed Maradana Police, who have now begun a formal investigation.
