President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne, Chairman of the expert committee appointed to draft new anti-terror legislation that the final draft of the proposed legislation would be handed over to Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara next week.
The expert committee, appointed by the Cabinet to draft the new law, held a meeting on Tuesday (09) evening at the Ministry of Justice and National Unity. Following the meeting, the Chairman said that the committee was still identifying and reviewing contentious areas in the draft and would study the legislation thoroughly. The committee was expected to meet daily throughout this week to finalise its work.
The Chairman also mentioned that the Department of Legislative Draftsmen was carrying out the actual drafting of the new law.
Participating in the discussions were Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle from the Attorney General’s Department, Additional Secretary (Legal) Piyamunthi Peiris from the Ministry of Justice and National Unity, along with several other ministry officials.
