Former senior military officers said that the latest UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka had dropped the call for foreign judges, a demand that was forcefully articulated in the 2015 resolution endorsed by the Yahapalana goverment.
That call explicitly recognised that international involvement was essential in bringing credibility to any accountability mechanism going forward. However, the 2025 resolution called for the setting up of an “independent public prosecutorial body”. Sources recalled that foreign judges were to be included in a hybrid war crimes mechanism in terms of an arrangement involving the Yahapalana government, the Tamil National Alliance and the US.
