Neville Wanniarachchi, who served Chief Security Officer of Mahinda Rajapaksa, when the latter was the President, was yesterday arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded till Oct 17 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S Bodaragama.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Bodaragama issued the order after considering the submissions made by the CIABOC officials and the suspect’s lawyers.
He was arrested and produced before the court on charges of failing to disclose the manner in which he acquired assets estimated to be worth over Rs. 28 million.
CIABOC officers took Wanniarachchi into custody shortly after recording a statement yesterday morning (2).
A retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Army, Wanniarachchi had been under investigation for some time. He was previously summoned by the CID last year to record a statement in connection with a probe into the alleged accumulation of illicit assets.
