Trade unions seek Mahanayake Theras’ intervention to stop ‘unlawful restructuring’ of CEB

Leaders of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) trade unions have appealed for the intervention of religious leaders to stop what they describe as the unlawful restructuring of the CEB. They handed over an appeal to Malwatte and Asgiri Maha Nayakas on October 10. They also met Malwatte Maha Nayaka, Most Ven. Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, and Asgiri Maha Nayaka, Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanalokanatha Thera.

The trade unions have highlighted the adverse impact privatisation could have on electricity consumers. They have emphasised that their intention is to resist the reckless and unlawful restructuring process currently underway. The CEB trade unions have also called on the President and the Minister of Power to put in place a transparent, fair, and consultative mechanism to carry out power sector reforms.

They have warned that if the authorities fail to rectify the unlawful process, they will not hesitate to further escalate industrial measures in the future.
