Special police unit set up in support of Proceeds of Crime Act

The NPP government has established a special unit, called Proceeds of Crime Investigation Division (PCID), to conduct investigations in terms of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 05 of 2025.

After having won both presidential and parliamentary polls in 2024, the NPP enacted the Proceeds of Crime Bill on 08 April, 2025.

Former Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told The Island that this Act had been among three new Acts that were to be introduced during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s tenure as the President from July 2022 to August 2024.

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala, who is also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, yesterday (20), inaugurated the new unit in the old Police Headquarters building.

The PCID will investigate the illegal acquisition of funds, property and assets. Former parliamentarian Rajapakshe said that the Anti-Corruption Act, Regulation of Election Expenditure Act and the Proceeds of Crime Act were meant to improve financial discipline and fight corruption.

There hadn’t been a previous instance of Police Headquarters setting up a new unit in support of a particular Act (SF)
