Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala yesterday told Parliament that arrests were imminent in connection with the assassination of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha PS) Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara, who was gunned down on Wednesday inside the PS.
Wijepala said that crucial information had been uncovered about the suspects involved in the killing, and that all those responsible would be taken into custody within the next two to three days.
“Soon after the shooting, directives were issued to the IGP and the CID to conduct a comprehensive investigation,” the Minister said, adding that four special Police teams had been deployed to pursue leads.
Wickramasekara was shot dead by an unidentified gunman on Wednesday (22). The brazen daylight attack shocked the southern coastal town, drawing widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger law enforcement.
Wijepala said investigators had made “substantial progress” and the police were now closing in on the suspects.
“We have already received vital information about those involved. The CID and Police teams are working round the clock to ensure that all suspects are arrested within the next few days,” he told Parliament.
The Minister assured that the government would not allow political or underworld influences to hinder the investigation, adding that the full force of the law would be brought against the perpetrators once apprehended.
