Opposition complains of govt. inaction over controversial release of 323 containers

Chief Opposition Whip and Galle District SJB MP Gayantha Karunathilaka yesterday (11) accused the government of inaction over the Opposition’s demand for the appointment of a special parliamentary committee to probe the questionable release of 323 containers from the Colombo Port without Customs inspection.

Raising the issue in Parliament, Karunathilaka said the Committee on Parliamentary Business had agreed on 10 October to appoint a special committee, following the submission of a proposal on 07 October. However, he noted there had been no progress.

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne confirmed that the proposal had been reviewed. “It has been included as a proposal without a specific date,” the Speaker said, adding that a date would be decided at the next meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Business.
