The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the signing of a renewed agreement with the Italian government on the mutual recognition of driving licences, updating a pact that lapsed in 2021.
The revised agreement incorporates new technological features and strengthened enforcement mechanisms, officials said.
Under the renewed terms, Sri Lankans who have lived in Italy for less than six years will be able to convert their valid Sri Lankan driving licences to Italian licences. In return, Italian nationals residing in Sri Lanka will have their Italian licences recognised as valid in Sri Lanka.
The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet by the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development.
