Although heavy rainfall has eased, Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Athula Karunanayake has urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly in view of flood risks.
Karunanayake warned that saturated soil across the country increased the likelihood of landslides, and people should exercise caution when returning to their homes.
He also highlighted that weather warnings remain in effect along the coastal belt from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai and from Kankesanthurai to Puttalam, advising the fishing community to avoid fishing and naval activities in these areas today.
The direct impact of the cyclone has passed, but Karunanayake noted that indirect effects persisted, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 50 km/h and sea waves rising to 2–3 meters.
In other sea areas where winds have decreased, fishermen are advised to consult with the Department of Fisheries before deciding whether it is safe to resume operations.
